Unique hand made porcelain ceramics made with love
Unique hand made porcelain ceramics made with love
I have been drawn to clay and the beauty of wildlife from an early age.
I was born and raised in Hungary and have been surrounded by traditional arts and crafts my whole life. My ancestry draws on the entire Carpathian basin, and nature, as well as the rich patterns of traditional ceramics and embroidery have a strong influence on my work. These elements come through in my work subconsciously, resulting in a personal narrative evoking comfort, warmth, and happiness.
I developed my ceramic work alongside my day job as a diagnostic histopathologist. I found a crossover between analysis of tissue patterns under the microscope and my deep interest in texture and pattern in art. After 20 years in the NHS I decided to focus on ceramics as my long time passion.
Following many years of regular classes at Aylesford School of Ceramics, I completed certificates in City & Guilds in Creative Studies, the BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Ceramic Design and the Full Time Residential Ceramics Course at Forest Row School of Ceramics.
Based in rural Kent, I currently work from my garden studio surrounded by the countryside.
I work in batches of thrown functional porcelain with layered and textured slip decoration.
I also produce some hand built pieces. I use custom made stencils and stamps based on my own designs, as well as free hand slip trail patterns. My designs are spontaneous, each piece is different but collections sit well in a group. I also work on a separate range of sculptural pieces with a more contemplative design.
It is a long process from a lump of clay to a finished fired piece. Most of the time is taken by drying, and needs a lot of patience! Firing is the most exciting stage, it feels like Christmas every time!
The serenity of nature, traditional crafts of my homeland and the exploration of patterns in a contemporary setting culminate in pieces I intend to be satisfying to hold, reflecting the love with which they were made.
My inspiration is intuitive, taking me back to long holidays of my childhood and my fascination of patterns and textures found in nature. I love the different states of water, the contrast of land meeting water, the lines of reed, harmony of trees, and rocky shores. Traditional crafts of my homeland have a strong background influence on my work and are combined in the form of spontaneous surface layers or collage.
